I came home at 3:17 a.m., still humming the song they’d been playing on the hospital intercom. My feet ached, my scrubs smelled like antiseptic, and for once, the ER had been quiet. I had a rare weekend off, and I planned to spend it with my big brother, Rob—my best friend, my only family.

I even ran a hot bath. I was singing, off-key, thinking about what we’d cook for our weird little 4 a.m. “dinners,” maybe teasing him about how he still watched cartoons on his giant TV.

Then the red and blue lights hit the kitchen windows.

Tyler caught me as I collapsed, sobbing into his chest while Mason held my hand like he could anchor me to a world that suddenly felt hollow.

“My brother’s dead,” I whispered.
